Canvas Archiving, Long-term Storage, and Deletion of LionPATH Courses

On April 14th, the regularly scheduled Long-Term Storage and course deletion processes will occur in Canvas.  On May 20, 2025, the course Archiving process will occur, affecting LionPATH courses offered prior to and including Spring 2024 courses.      

To comply with the University’s General Retention Schedule for student grades, and to improve the functionality of Canvas, Penn State has developed an archiving process. When a course is archived, it will no longer appear on your Canvas Dashboard or in your All Courses list.      

April 14 & 15 activities include the following:     

  • Courses that will be deleted: 
  • All LionPATH courses taught prior to and including Spring 2020 (LionPATH term 2201)  
  • Courses that will be moved to Long-Term Storage: 
  • All LionPATH courses taught between, and including Summer 2020 and Spring 2022 (LionPATH terms 2205 – 2221). 
  • Courses available for archiving opt-out: 
  • All LionPATH courses taught prior to and including Spring 2024 (LionPATH term 2241) that are not already in Long-Term Storage or have been deleted.  

May 20, 2025 activities include the following: 

  • Courses that will be Archived: 
  • All LionPATH courses taught prior to and including Spring 2024 (LionPATH term 2241) that are not already in Long-Term Storage or have been deleted.   
  • Courses selected to opt-out before May 20th will not be archived.

This archiving process is intended for grade retention. It is not intended for the long-term storage of course material. Options available to retain course material for future use: 

  • Use a Master Course instead of retaining the original LionPath course. Please refer to Canvas: Request a Master Course (KB0011048) for instructions.     
  • Download a copy of the material needed from Canvas prior to the archive date.
