On November 18, the regularly scheduled Long-Term Storage and course deletion processes will occur in Canvas. On January 28th, 2025, the course Archiving process will occur, affecting LionPATH courses offered prior to and including Fall 2023 and non-LionPATH courses.
To comply with the University’s General Retention Schedule for student grades, and to improve the functionality of Canvas, Penn State has developed an archiving process. When a course is archived, it will no longer appear on your Canvas Dashboard or in your All Courses list.
November 18 & 19 activities include the following:
- Courses that will be deleted:
- All LionPATH courses taught prior to, and including, Fall 2019 (LionPATH term 2198)
- All non-LionPATH courses that have been in Long-Term Storage for more than two years (non-LionPATH courses that were archived and then in Long-Term Storage for two years).
- Courses that will be moved to Long-Term Storage:
- All LionPATH courses taught between, and including, Spring 2020 and Fall 2021 (LionPATH terms 2201 – 2218).
- All non-LionPATH courses that have been archived for the previous two years.
- Courses available for archiving opt-out:
- All LionPATH courses taught prior to, and including, Fall 2023 (LionPATH term 2238) that are not already in Long-Term Storage or have been deleted.
- All Non-LionPATH courses (master and manually enrolled courses) that were created prior to 2024, are not already in Long-Term Storage, or have not previously been deleted.
January 28, 2025 activities include the following:

This archiving process is intended for grade retention. It is not intended for the long-term storage of course material. Options available to retain course material for future use:
- Use a Master Course instead of retaining the original LionPath course. Please refer to Canvas: Request a Master Course (KB0011048) for instructions.
- Download a copy of the material needed from Canvas prior to the archive date.
