How to get the most out of Kaltura’s quiz feature

Mar 23, 2021

Engaging course content is more important than ever, and Kaltura’s embedded quiz feature provides Penn State faculty and instructors with a way to increase engagement with their videos.

There are four types of Kaltura quiz questions-multiple choice, true/false, reflection points, and open-available, that can help keep students active while viewing videos and aid in assessing learning objectives.

Based on data and feedback, faculty and instructors can implement the following best practices to ensure they get the most out of Kaltura video quizzes.

Multiple choice questions:

  • Use the “shuffle” icon to arrange answer options for multiple-choice questions. This guarantees that the correct answer isn’t always in the same position
  • If an “all of the above” or “none of the above” answer is used, always place it in the last answer position
  • Keep answer lengths similar

True/False questions:

  • Vary the occurrences of true or false being the correct answer
  • True/false questions can be changed to any question with two answers, i.e., yes/no questions

Reflection points:

  • These allow viewers to think about a specific question or statement while the video is paused
  • Viewers cannot respond to reflection points within Kaltura
  • The only way to require answers on reflection points is through the use of a submission form on another platform, such as attaching responses to a Canvas assignment

Open questions:

  • Viewers can provide short answers to video quiz questions
  • Kaltura does not automatically grade open question answers; however, the quiz owner can view the answers in “Analytics” and assign grades manually

For each question type, there is an option to add hints and rationale. Hints should always be used to prompt deeper thinking and not to give away the answer. The rationale feature is designed to help reinforce retention of the information.

For Kaltura quiz scores to appear in the Canvas gradebook, faculty and instructors must add the quiz to a Canvas Assignment using the external tool submission option. Embedding quizzes using the Rich Content Editor will not deliver the score to the gradebook.
